Convicted felon arrested for domestic assault and firearm possession

Deputies responded to a domestic dispute on Mocksville Road on Saturday involving an active assault and a threat to the caller’s life, Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell said in a news release.

Deputies A. Duecker and M. Dyson arrived on scene and encountered the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Joshua Anson Orner of Harmony.

During the investigation, deputies found a firearm magazine but did not initially find a gun.

The caller reported that the suspect had threatened to kill himself before communication was lost, Campbell said.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they heard a woman screaming about a gun.

As deputies attempted to arrest Orner, Orner attempted to flee and attacked them during the ensuing struggle.

A gun was later found during a search outside the residence.

Orner’s information was run through a national database, revealing his status as a felon with multiple prior felony convictions.

Orner is being held without bond on the following charges:

  • The crime of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

  • Aggravated assault by strangulation causing serious injury

  • Ugly attack on women

  • Domestic violence misdemeanor crime

  • Misdemeanor assault on a public servant

  • Resisting, delaying, preventing misdemeanors

  • Misdemeanor simple possession of Schedule IV controlled substance

His criminal history includes four counts of misdemeanor drug possession, criminal damage to personal property, two counts of felony sale or delivery of marijuana, driving while impaired, misdemeanor assault on a female, felony possession with intent to sell or distribute heroin, felony sale of methamphetamine, felony possession with intent to sell or distribute a counterfeit controlled substance, misdemeanor possession of a vehicle or dwelling for a controlled substance, and multiple traffic violations. He is currently on parole for misdemeanor charges such as possession of drug paraphernalia and possession or residence of a controlled substance.
