Two Swedes convicted of terrorism for grenade attack near Israeli Embassy

Two Swedes were convicted in a Danish terrorism court of attempted murder for detonating two grenades near the Israeli Embassy in Copenhagen in October 2024.

The youngest of the two men, aged 18, was sentenced to 12 years in prison, while his older accomplice, aged 21, was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Associated PressHe cited Swedish news agency TT. The two unidentified men were said to be acting on behalf of a criminal gang, AP reported.

The attack took place on October 2, 2024, when the duo threw grenades at the Israeli Embassy in Copenhagen. According to AP, the hand grenades exploded on the terrace of a building where a family with children lived. No one was injured in the explosions. The nearby Jewish school Carolineskolen was closed at the time of the attack.

According to the AP report, the two men admitted to throwing the grenades but denied that they were ideologically motivated and said they did it for money.

The Danish court was reportedly divided on whether the duo should be convicted of terrorism. Two judges and four jurors concluded they were guilty, while one judge and two jurors disagreed, according to the AP, citing TT.

At the time of the attack, Israel’s war in Gaza had been ongoing for nearly a year following the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023, which left 1,200 people dead and 251 people taken hostage. Throughout the war, Jerusalem faced international scrutiny as world leaders debated whether the Israeli Defense Forces’ actions in Gaza were excessive.
