Cory Booker unleashes fiery call for ‘foot soldiers’ at Michigan Dem conference
Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., delivered a high-energy, uplifting sermon-style speech at the meeting. Michigan Democratic ConventionHe shouts and gestures as he calls on Democrats to be “footsoldiers of democracy” and warns that “darkness and wind” are sweeping the country.
Booker was one of several out-of-state leaders, including the former Vice President. Kamala Harris and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear will attend the Michigan Democratic Convention. All three have been named as possible candidates for the 2028 presidential election.
Booker spoke for about 25 minutes, at some points shouting at the crowd and using poetic tone and word choice.
“Ladies and gentlemen, there is a storm in our nation,” Booker shouted as he finished his speech. “There is darkness and wind. People are getting hurt. Booker then announced that it was time for Democrats to “save the American dream.”
“Will you stand up for our democracy? Will you stand up for votes? Will you stand up for our children? Will you stand up for our elders?” Booker said. “And will you stand together, united, strong – be the hope the people need. We are Democrats. It’s time for a new deal. It’s time to realize America’s dream.”
Booker, who is running for president in 2020, used the speech as an opportunity to introduce himself to Michigan voters, sharing his career in politics and family ties to the Great Lakes State.

At one point, he expressed dismay at voters who gave up voting for presidential candidates. Hillary Clinton or Vice President Kamala Harris because they disagreed on “ten percent of their views.”
“You may not agree with him on 10% of his views, but you’re allowing someone with whom you disagree on everything to come into office,” Booker scolded. “You let someone in office who locked up our children. You let in someone who took away our health care. You let in someone who took away workers’ rights. You let in someone who got rid of the Department of Education.”
He then suggested that Democratic voters in Michigan flip the election. michigan hand – a reference to the state’s shape – the “Michigan fist”.

“I don’t want the Michigan hand, I want the Michigan fist,” Booker shouted after the August primary. “I want you all to unite. I want you all to put a hole in the wall of resistance. I want you to grab a sledgehammer and knock some things down. I want you to reach out, grab someone, lift them off the couch, and take them out on the court. We’ve got points to put on the board. I want the Michigan punch. I want some unity.”
But former MSNBC commentator Medhi Hasan disputed Booker’s claim about Democratic voters not voting for Harris in 2024. Hasan said Booker’s characterization puts the blame on voters for the Democrats’ loss rather than the party platform.

“I tried to tell people this: Didn’t vote Dem in 2024 Hasan shared a video of Booker’s speech on X, saying, “Teaching the Democrats a lesson,” and unfortunately the Democrats will never learn that lesson. “Here Booker is attacking and mocking people who didn’t show up just to vote for Democrats. It’s always the voters’ fault, never the Democrats’ or their candidates’ fault.”
Other critics mocked Booker’s emphatic redemption.
“Keep calm, Spartacus,” wrote America First Works, a nonprofit group and advocacy arm of the America First Policy Institute.
