Couple find out they’ve won £1m while eating McDonald’s McFlurrys | UK | News

Rob and Lisa Nicholson were enjoying their McFlurry during a shopping trip when they received a call that would change their lives forever.
Rob initially ignored the call from Omaze, dismissing it as a “spam call.” But after they were informed they had won £1 million, they described it as “a very happy meal indeed”.
After buying a ticket for just £15, they rushed home to collect the tax-free sum that would change their lives.
Engineer Rob, 69, and NHS worker Lisa, 54, said they can now celebrate their 23rd wedding anniversary in style this week and retire early to look after their three children.
The couple were in York to visit their youngest son, Max, at university when Omaze called.
They were about to sit down at McDonald’s and have a McFlurry and coffee when the phone rang.
Rob said: “We were enjoying a well-deserved McFlurry after trying some terrible Christmas shopping. “I didn’t answer the first few calls because we thought it was probably a spam caller trying to throw something at us.
“When I finally picked up the phone and realized it was Omaze, I looked at my wife and said, ‘I think we need to ditch the McFlurries and head home now!’ I said. So we hurriedly put down our McFlurries and headed straight home to meet up with the Omaze team.
“When the dust settled and we realized we were going to be millionaires, we were both in shock. I didn’t know how to celebrate, so I suggested having a nice cup of tea, but my wife said opening a bottle of wine would be much more appropriate.”
Rob, a design engineer who has worked in the industry for 40 years, lives in West Yorkshire with Lisa, who works as a social care manager in the NHS. The couple, who will celebrate their 23rd wedding anniversary this week, have three children: Charlotte (31), Lewis (30) and Max (21).
He continued: “When I told my boss he said ‘why are you still here?’ he said. He assumed I would retire immediately.
“But I love my job and the people I work with, so I’m going to shorten my days for a while and eventually retire and pass on the baton. I kept working mostly to pay our son’s college tuition, and thanks to the win we can now pay it all in one go.”
Rob said his Omaze Monthly Millionaire Giveaway win couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.
He added: “This is a life-changing amount of money, it will really change things for the whole family.
“Both of our boys are autistic so having this extra money will make a huge difference. We will be able to help all three children, it means the world to us that we can give our children a great start in life.”
He continued: “My wife said it was time for us to spend some time together, enjoy life and reward ourselves. I know you’ve had your eye on a special bag, but now we can go back to get it. I’m guessing their Christmas list will be quite long this year! Even though we didn’t waste it all, my wife still bought a second-class stamp yesterday.”
