The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M), Mysuru unit) has strongly opposed the recent increase in water tariff and sewerage charges imposed by the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) from April 1 and demanded immediate withdrawal of the decision.
In its statement, the party argued that the increase would create an additional financial burden for residents who are already struggling with rising costs of living.
Instead of increasing tariffs, the CPI(M) urged the MCC to prioritize improving civil infrastructure such as roads, street lights and other basic amenities in the city.
CPI(M) members held a demonstration in Mysuru on Monday (April 6) to press for the rollback of revised water tariff and sewerage charges fixed at 40% of the water bill.
The party also criticized the slice-based tariff system for domestic consumers and opposed the imposition of a flat fee of ₹163 per month regardless of water usage, saying it was unfair.
Highlighting the financial pressure on citizens, CPI(M) leaders said residents were already suffering from the recent increases in property tax. They described the increase in water tariff and underground drainage (UGD) charges as “unscientific”.
Additionally, the party questioned the timing of the decision, stating that in the absence of an elected body in the MCC, such tariff increases should not be implemented without proper discussion and public consultation.
