Cristian Romero: Tottenham captain out for season with knee injury as Premier League survival hopes hit

Tottenham Captain Cristian Romero will miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in the 1-0 away defeat. Sunderland.

Argentine defender Romero, 27, looked visibly upset as he limped off after colliding with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky during Sunday’s Premier League match at the Stadium of Light.

This has raised concerns that Tottenham, who are fighting to avoid relegation, may have suffered an injury serious enough to rule him out in their last six games.

Following tests, Romero is expected to be out for up to eight weeks due to a high-grade partial tear in his medial cruciate ligament.

His chances of being included in the Argentina squad for this summer’s World Cup are also uncertain.

Romero’s absence is a major obstacle for newly appointed head coach Roberto de Zerbi as he tries to keep Tottenham at the top.

After the match, De Zerbi said Romero was “a good player with a big personality” and a “very important player” for Spurs.

Tottenham currently sit 18th in the Premier League, two points behind West Ham, who sit just above the relegation zone.
