Vatican declares Society of St. Pius X in schism, excommunicates bishops and invalidates sacraments

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican on Thursday reacted aggressively to a traditionalist society that consecrated bishops without the pope’s permission. Society of Saint Pius X In disunity, he excommunicates his bishops and admonishes his faithful.

The Vatican’s doctrinal office went above and beyond the minimum sanctions stipulated in the church’s canons. blessing on wednesday Four new bishops were appointed to the association’s Econe seminary in Switzerland.

Known by the acronym SSPX, the community celebrates the ancient Latin Mass and opposes the modernizing reforms of the Catholic Church, which it sees as full of heresies and errors and accuses of straying from the Catholic faith.

In a decree, the Vatican excommunicated the four new bishops and the two bishops who attended the ceremony. He declared that the beatifications were a “divisive act” and that the society itself was creating a schism or deliberate rupture with the Catholic Church.

The Vatican warned believers attending communion services to stop and declared that those “formally affiliated” with the community considered themselves schismatics and excommunicates. It also invalidated the sacraments of confession and marriage practiced by the community’s priests.

The sanctions, especially those targeting believers and the sacraments they could receive, were particularly harsh and reversed the concessions the Vatican had made to the SSPX in recent years.

French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre founded the SSPX in 1970 in opposition to the modernizing reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Among other things, the conclaves of the 1960s, known as Vatican II, revolutionized the church’s relations with other Christians, Jews, and people of other faiths, allowing the Mass to be celebrated in the vernacular rather than Latin.

Lefebvre consecrated four bishops without papal permission in 1988. The Vatican immediately excommunicated Lefebvre and four bishops and declared the consecration a “divisive act.”

Celebrations created a crisis Pope Leo XIV because the American pope emphasized the necessity of church unity. He reached out to the conservative and traditionalist wing of the church, which had been alienated in many ways, especially during the papacy of Pope Francis.

But the sanctions imposed on Thursday show that after nearly five decades of trying to negotiate with society, the Vatican has had enough.

The SSPX accused the church of being full of heresies and errors and that only the church upholds the true faith of Christ. He justified his blessings by citing a “state of necessity” to serve his faithful.

In his homily during Wednesday’s blessing, SSPX superior Rev. Davide Pagliarani insisted that the blessings served Leo and the church.

“We are accused of not respecting the Pope,” Pagliarani said. “But precisely because we love the pope as the vicar of Christ, the head of the church, we do not want to see the pope any longer humiliated by false shepherds who represent false religions.”
