Cyclone Ditwah: As Sri Lanka continues to struggle with harsh weather conditions, heavy rains, rising flood waters and repeated landslides have disrupted life in many parts of the country. India has also extended support to its neighbor through Operation Sagar Bandhu, which was launched to deliver aid and assist in rescue operations.

The operation is in full swing, delivering aid and assistance to Sri Lanka amid the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar highlighted the close coordination between NDRF personnel and Sri Lankan authorities in the ongoing relief operations in the island nation.

In a post on X on Sunday, EAM Jaishankar said, “@NDRFHQ personnel continue to conduct relief operations in Sri Lanka, in close coordination with local authorities. #OperationSagarBandhu.”

Sri Lanka Death Toll

According to news agency IANS, the death toll due to severe weather conditions triggered by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka has risen to 153, while at least 191 people are still missing as rescue operations intensify, local media reported, citing the Disaster Management Center (DMC).

What is the Latest Status of Cyclone Ditwah?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the minimum distance of the center of the cyclone from the northern Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast was around 70 kilometers.

Cyclone Ditwah: Strong Winds, Choppy Seas Hit Puducherry

According to ANI, strong winds and choppy sea conditions have been reported along the Puducherry coast as Cyclone Ditwah continues to approach, prompting authorities to issue warnings and take precautionary measures.

IMD issues Warning for Tamil Nadu

The IMD on Sunday issued a red alert for coastal northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining southern Andhra Pradesh; as Cyclonic Storm Ditwah continues its northward path over the southwestern Bay of Bengal, moving closer to the coastline.

Meanwhile, according to an IANS report, a woman (20) died after a wall collapsed at her home near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu on Sunday; Heavy rain continued to lash parts of the state due to the impact of Cyclone Ditwah.

Chennai Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) stated that Cyclone Ditwah, which formed over the southwestern Bay of Bengal, has started to weaken and is expected to turn into a deep depression around 5.30 pm on Sunday.

Notably, RMC also clarified that the system is unlikely to land on the Tamil Nadu coast.
