According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system may intensify into a severe cyclonic storm as it approaches Andhra Pradesh, bringing strong winds of 90-100 km per hour, gusts of up to 110 km per hour and heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Coastal areas in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and parts of Tamil Nadu have been put on high alert, while disaster management teams are preparing for possible evacuations and safety measures. Authorities are closely monitoring the direction of the storm, issuing warnings for affected areas and advising fishermen to return to shore. While the rains are expected to continue between 27-29 October, residents in sensitive areas are urged to stay informed and follow official advice to reduce risk and ensure safety.

Cyclone Montha Tracker: Expected landfall time and path

  • The depression in the southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to develop into a deep depression on October 26, a cyclonic storm on the morning of October 27, and a severe cyclonic storm on the morning of October 28.
  • IMD predicts that land will fall near Kakinada between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam on the evening or night of October 28.
  • Expected wind speeds when approaching land: 90-100 km/h, gusts up to 110 km/h.

Hurricane Moon: Heavy rain and affected areas

  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Rayalaseema are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall between October 27-29.
  • Odisha may experience sustained winds of 90-100 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 110 kilometers per hour, which may cause heavy rain in the southern coastal areas.
  • Tamil Nadu and other coastal regions are also advised to be prepared for stormy weather.

Cyclone Montha IMD alerts and warnings

  • Red alert issued for Odisha districts: Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Ganjam, Gajapati.
  • Yellow alert for nine other districts of Odisha.
  • Stormy weather with wind speed of 35-45 km per hour is expected along the south Odisha coast from Saturday evening, it will increase to 60-70 km per hour and gusty wind will increase to 80 km per hour on Monday night.

Cyclone Montha: India’s Preparations and safety precautions

  • Disaster management teams in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are on high alert.
  • Hurricane shelters prepared in vulnerable districts; Leaves of government employees were canceled in Koraput, Ganjam and Balasore.
  • IMD-Amaravati scientist S. Karunasagar said: “On October 26, gusty weather is expected to prevail along and off the Andhra coast and Yanam, with wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kilometers per hour, with wind speeds up to 65 kilometers per hour.”
  • Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari instructed collectors to intensify preparations and assured: “People should not panic. The government is taking all necessary steps to ensure safety and manage any emergency.”

Coast Guard advisory for Hurricane Montha

The Indian Coast Guard contacted fishermen at sea and urged them to return to shore as a precaution due to the system developing in the southeastern Bay of Bengal.
