The “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” singer isn’t the only celebrity to weigh in on the SAVINGS Act.

Meryl Streep previously raised alarm on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” by suggesting that married women could face new obstacles at the ballot box.

“I hope Save America ActIf this passes, all married women who change their names will have to go to the registrar and prove who they are. “In other words,” he told the polling officer, “this is what I understand. Otherwise, when you go to the voting booth in November, you may be disqualified because your name on your birth certificate does not match your name on the ballot. So everyone has to do it and it’s a huge headache because you have to go, but do it because otherwise you’re going to be turned away.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer went further, comparing the proposal to “Jim Crow 2.0.”

Schumer said, “Each state may have their own voter ID laws, and some have them and some don’t. But secondly, what they’re proposing in this so-called SAVINGS Act is like Jim Crow 2.0. They’re making it so difficult to get any kind of voter ID that over 20 million legitimate people, mostly poor people and people of color, won’t be able to vote under it. We’re not going to let this pass the Senate. We’re fighting this tooth and nail.” February CNN interview.

Republicans are responding equally forcefully, insisting that the bill protects election integrity without impeding eligible voters.

“This is complete nonsense, and we’re specifically allowing a regulation to make sure no one is left behind,” said Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas.

“If a woman tries to register to vote with different names on her birth certificate and driver’s license,” Roy said, “literally all you have to do against the law is sign an affidavit under penalty of perjury: ‘I am that person. This is my birth certificate…and this is my driver’s license that reflects my married name.'”

The SAVE Act would require proof of citizenship to vote, direct states to verify and remove noncitizens from voter rolls, expand coordination with federal agencies like DHS, and impose new criminal penalties for registering noncitizens.
