Burnham says ‘serious review’ needed into MP security
Andy Burnham said the safety of MPs needed a “serious review” following the suspected murder of Ann Widdecombe.
The new prime minister said politics had “darkened” in the decade since he was last in Westminster and protections may need to be “further increased”.
Asked why he thought frontline politics had become so dangerous for incumbents and former politicians, the recently elected Makerfield MP told reporters outside the House of Commons: “10 years on I’m noticing quite a lot of change in the building behind me, it’s not just about the safety issue.
“I was actually quite surprised to see how much security needs to be at the moment, but even so it may need to be increased further.
“Politics has become dark in the last decade, there is no escape from it.”

Mahmood urged to consider ‘buffer zones’ outside MPs’ offices
Shabana Mahmood has been urged to consider creating “buffer zones” around MPs’ offices to keep them safe following the death of Ann Widdecombe.
To talk TelegramLord Walney, the former government adviser on political violence, called on the Home Secretary to take measures so that anyone who violates the zone faces prosecution and fines by the police, council or other law enforcement agencies.
“We have entered an era in which activists across the political spectrum believe that the importance of their cause justifies intimidation, disruption and, in some cases, violence,” Lord Walney said in a letter to Ms Mahmood.
“Elected representatives are confronted with methods that go far beyond robust democratic participation. The disruption of council meetings, constituency surgeries and other democratic forums by organized activists creates an atmosphere of implied physical threat even in the absence of overt violence.
“Such tactics are not designed to win arguments. They are designed to silence, suppress and intimidate those who are fulfilling their democratic responsibilities.”
