Dallas Cowboys, NFL mourn death of Marshawn Kneeland

Kneeland suffered his first career defeat in this year’s season opener against Philadelphia. The player, who played in 7 matches this season, played in two matches due to an ankle injury.

“Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization,” the Cowboys said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Marshawn, his girlfriend Catalina, and his family.”

Kneeland’s mother, Wendy Kneeland, died suddenly while preparing for the draft. Reportedly, the necklace he wore after joining the Cowboys contained his mother’s ashes. Dallas Morning News.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of Cowboys receiver Marshawn Kneeland,” the NFL said.

Miami Dolphins receivers coach Robert Prince, who held the same position with the Cowboys last year when Kneeland was a rookie, had tears in his eyes when he met with reporters Thursday.

Tributes have poured in from across the NFL, including from Tennessee Titans linebacker Jeffery Simmons, who brought up the issue of suicide awareness with a reporter at training camp this year.

Two of Kneeland’s Dallas teammates, quarterback Dak Prescott and defensive lineman Solomon Thomas, had siblings who died by suicide and had foundations that support suicide awareness and prevention. Thomas’s sister, Ella, was the same age as Kneeland.
