Brianna Mohr dies of hypothermia on Mount Marcy winter hike in New York

A 21-year-old New Jersey woman died of hypothermia when she slipped off a trail near the top of New York’s tallest mountain during a winter hike, authorities said.

Brianna Mohr was found by New York State Rangers near the summit of Mount Marcy on February 12, where she was pronounced dead, according to New York State Police.

State rangers said they launched an extensive search after receiving a report that a hiker and his dog were in danger on Mount Marcy at 3 p.m.

Mohr was found around 9 p.m. and showed no signs of life, police said. An autopsy later determined that the cause of death was hypothermia.

His dog was rescued without injury.

On the day Mohr hiked, temperatures in Keene, New York, where the mountain is located, ranged from -8 to 20 degrees, according to AccuWeather.com. Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks is the highest mountain in the state at 5,344 feet.

A spokesman for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said Mohr called 911 at 3:05 p.m. to report that he had gone off the road near the summit and was unable to return there. Asbury Park Press.

Rangers searched for Mohr on snowmobiles and a tracked utility vehicle, and the state police Aviation Unit flew overhead in case a crane rescued him, the source said.

The newspaper said rangers in the helicopter were unable to locate Mohr, and a ranger was dropped off at the Marcy Dam Police Station after 6 p.m. to continue the search on foot.

The outlet shared a message posted on Instagram by Mohr’s brother Ryan on February 16.

“You were the best friend and sister I could ever ask for, growing up with you was amazing because I always had you tell me what was cool and what wasn’t because you were and always will be the coolest person I have ever known,” she wrote.

Mohr’s mother, Stephanie West, shared a photo of her daughter on Valentine’s Day with the caption, “I’m so lost.”

Mohr’s Instagram account features dozens of photos from trips to natural places, including national parks.
