Damien Martyn: Former Australia batter in coma in hospital

Speaking on Perth’s 6PR radio station, former AFL star Brad Hardie said: “WA’s champion Damien Martyn [Western Australia] Unfortunately he fell ill the next day and is currently living in a hospital in Queensland.

“I want everyone to express their best wishes and positive thoughts for Marto. I hope he can achieve this, because the situation is really serious.”

Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Northamptonshire head coach Darren Lehmann is Martyn’s former team-mate. He said it in X., external “Much love and prayers…Protect the mighty and warrior legend.”

During his career, Martyn scored 4,406 Test runs at an average of 46.37.

He was also a prolific one-day batsman, scoring 5,346 runs in 208 matches at an average of 40, including five hundreds and 37 fifties.

He remained unbeaten in the 2003 World Cup final, where Australia beat India despite suffering a broken finger, and represented Yorkshire as an overseas player in 2003.
