Danny Rohl: Rangers boss leaves for Red Bull Salzburg

Danny Rohl left Rangers after just eight months to become head coach of RB Salzburg, with the club saying news of his replacement “will come in due course”.

Hearts head coach Derek McInnes is expected to be the German’s successor as Rangers prepare to appoint a third manager in 12 months.

Rohl, 37, replaced Russell Martin in October and guided Rangers to a three-way title challenge, but a post-division slump saw the Ibrox club end the campaign without silverware, finishing third behind Celtic and Hearts.

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh publicly backed Rohl at the end of the season, but the German returns to the Red Bull team having started his coaching career under Ralph Hasenhuttl at Leipzig.

“I would like to thank Danny for his service and dedication to Rangers,” Cavenagh said.

“He and his team have put in a significant amount of hard work throughout his tenure and we greatly appreciate that.

“We wish them success in the future.”

Rohl, who has two years left on his contract, departs to take charge of a Salzburg team that finished third in Austria last season (the club’s lowest finish for two decades) and will enter the Europa League in the third qualifying round, at the same stage as Rangers.

Daniel Beichler was fired as Salzburg coach last month after just 14 games.

Rohl joined Hasenhuttl at Southampton in 2018, then moved to Bayern Munich as Hansi Flick’s assistant and helped the club win the Bundesliga. He was subsequently appointed manager of Sheffield Wednesday in 2023.
