Royal Mail update today as 117 UK postcodes hit by delays full list | Personal Finance | Finance

Royal Mail has today published an update on the 117 postcodes affected by severe outages. The national delivery service said it could not guarantee parcel or letter delivery to anyone living there 6 days a week.

The huge level of disruption means people are not guaranteed to receive deliveries in time for Christmas. The latest list states that 117 zip codes suffer from the problem.

The problems arose despite Royal Mail hiring around 20,000 extra workers to help carry, sort and distribute mail during the busy festive season.

Royal Mail said: “We aim to deliver to all addresses where we receive mail six days a week. In a small number of local offices, this may not be temporarily possible due to local issues such as high levels of sickness absence, sourcing or other local factors. In these cases, we will rotate deliveries to individual customers to minimize delay. We are also providing targeted support to these offices to resolve any difficulties they face and return our service to the high standard our customers would normally receive.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.” The Christmas problems follow Royal Mail’s admission that it has delivered less than three-quarters of first-class mail on time in recent months.

The delivery giant said 73.4% of first-class mail was delivered on the next business day between June 20 and September 28. It also reported that 90.4% of second-class mail was delivered within three business days.

The latest service quality report shows declining performance since the annual results.

Royal Mail has been fined £21 million by regulator Ofcom for missing mail delivery targets for the 2024-25 financial year. During the year, it delivered 77% of first-class mail and 92.5% of second-class mail on time.

This rate remained below the targets of 93% and 98.5%, respectively. Royal Mail said it was taking action to improve the reliability of its services, including hiring more staff and supporting delivery offices.

The company is also preparing to implement changes that will eliminate second-class deliveries on Saturdays and shift the service to two weekdays.

It is running pilots for the new delivery model and aims to continue rolling it out from early next year.

Jamie Stephenson, chief operating officer of Royal Mail, said: “Reliable deliveries are really important to our customers and important to us too.

“We are taking targeted actions to improve performance; we are hiring more frontline staff, simplifying operations and investing in a new delivery model; initial pilots are already showing measurable results.”

He added that his team “works hard to make sure every product arrives on time and with care.”
