Unnao rape: Sengar moves Supreme Court seeking bail in death case of survivor’s father

The Supreme Court is likely on Monday, February 8, 2026, to dismiss the plea of ​​BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar seeking bail in the custodial death case of Unnao rape victim’s father.

On January 19, the Delhi High Court had refused to postpone Sengar’s 10-year prison sentence in the case citing delay in trial, arguing that this was partly due to the multiple applications filed by Sengar in the matter.

On March 13, 2020, Sengar was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹10 lakh by a court in the case. The trial court had said that “no tolerance can be shown” to the killing of the “only breadwinner” of a family.

In the father’s case, the court did not find the defendant guilty of murder, and decided that there was no intent to kill, and gave the defendant the heaviest penalty for premeditated murder, which is not considered murder.

Sengar’s appeal in the main rape case against the December 2019 verdict that convicted him and sentenced him to imprisonment for the rest of his life and against the father’s case is ongoing in the Supreme Court.

His sentence was suspended by the high court on December 23, 2025, pending the outcome of his appeal challenging his conviction and sentence in the rape case. The Supreme Court lifted the restraining order on December 29, 2025.
