David Beckham laughed off boos in New York as he refused to pick the winner of Sunday’s World Cup final.
The former England captain has almost always attended the tournament in North America and made headlines when he and his wife Victoria applauded his country’s win over Norway.
Then, on Wednesday, when England lost to Argentina in the semi-final, Becks was consoled by his 21-year-old son Cruz, who was sitting in the stands in Atlanta with his head in his hands.
It would have been easy to pick England to claim the trophy had they reached the final, but Beckham was instead forced to choose between European champions Spain and his old foe.
The 51-year-old was speaking alongside Brazil legend Kaka at Fanatics Fest in New York and was asked who he thought would take home the trophy on Sunday.
He said: ‘Oh my god. Obviously I played in Spain, so I have a great love for Spain as a country and of course for the football team. I think they did an outstanding job at this World Cup and deserve to get to the final.

‘Argentina also has Lionel (Messi). As I talked about Ricardo (Kaka), I will say the same about Lionel because he is an extraordinary player but he is an extraordinary person with the right values and treats everyone the way they should be treated. I’m wandering around the houses…’
When asked for an answer, Beckham replied: ‘I’ll sit on the fence. I don’t know who will win. I want Lionel to be incredibly successful because he is an extraordinary person and actor. But it will be difficult to play against Spain.
I won’t say who I think will win. ‘I’ll just sit on the fence and enjoy the game.’
The crowd then booed Beckham, with the former midfielder and Kaka also laughing at the taunts.
Beckham later joked: ‘I haven’t been booed in a while. I got booed a little bit the other night. I wasn’t waiting here.”
Beckham, who is close friends with Messi, who played for Beckham’s Inter Miami team in the United States, was sent off against Diego Simeone in the 1998 World Cup, before Argentina won the last 16 rounds on penalties.
And he was left devastated as England lost again to Argentina in midweek after he and his team were drowned out while singing the national anthem due to boos from the opposition.
