A day after the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, there were tensions in the Churachandpur region of Manipur on Sunday. A mafia protested the detention of two young people on the allegations of vandalizing PM Modi on their journey. According to the authorities, most police were released after interrogation, two young people were detained.

What happened in Churachandpur and what did the police say?

A group of protesters began to show near the Churachandpur Police Station to request immediately release of two young people in custody. Protesters increased the situation while throwing stones in the security forces. After the police released the two youth, tensions decreased. The police had previously claimed that two were arrested. “Two people were not randomly detained as requested by the protesters, but was taken for inquiry from the Vandalism zone.” He said.

PM Modi visited Manipur for the first time on Saturday since ethnic conflicts broke out between Kuki and Meitei communities in May 2023. The Prime Minister also met with people affected by violence and opened a series of development projects.
