The decision of the Donald Trump administration to tighten the rules regarding the length of stay of nonimmigrant visas, especially those issued to students, will oversimplify the issue and affect honest candidates whose only desire is to pursue higher education in the United States.

Under the old visa rules, F visa holders (students) were allowed to remain in the United States until their visit purpose was completed or their period of status (DoS) expired. The Trump administration claimed this allowed foreign students to abuse the immigration system by repeatedly enrolling in courses to avoid leaving the United States.

According to the proposed system, the duration of stay of students will be limited to four years. If they need additional time to complete an academic program, they must apply for an extension of stay.

According to a study conducted in 2025, there were 3,63,019 Indian students enrolled in US colleges. Indians constitute the largest foreign student body in the United States, representing 31 percent of the 1.2 million international students pursuing higher education in the country.

The number of Indian students in the United States is a small percentage of the six million students pursuing graduate education in India. It is true that in every society there will be some people who try to game the system, but it is unfortunate to try to portray all foreign students as disgraces. Visa rules are also consistent with the Trump administration’s preference for making policy based on perception rather than data.

Foreign students are the main source of income for hundreds of US colleges, effectively financing the education of American students. Therefore, the new rule will affect universities in the USA the most and increase education costs, while foreign students will look for other alternatives.

The Narendra Modi government should step up efforts to ensure that prestigious universities set up campuses in India and ensure that Indians do not have to leave their homeland for higher education.
