Deadly air raids across Ukraine after warnings of Russian strike wave | Ukraine

At least five people were killed and dozens injured in Russian air strikes on major Ukrainian centers such as Kiev, Dnipro and Kharkiv early Tuesday morning, officials said.

Regional Governor Oleksandr Hanzha said that 4 people died and 16 people were injured in Russia’s attack on Dnipro in eastern Ukraine. Stating that all the injured were hospitalized, the official published pictures of heavily damaged residences, burned vehicles and a destroyed children’s playground.

In Kiev, at least one person was killed and 29 people were injured across the capital, Timur Tkachenko, head of the capital’s military administration, said.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that a suspected missile attack on a 24-storey apartment building caused a collapse and people were probably trapped under the rubble. Other buildings, including a nine-storey apartment block, also caught fire, he said.

“In the Obolon area, cars hit by falling missile fragments are burning. There are also fires in two open areas, one of which is near the kindergarten,” Klitschko said. Witnesses said thousands of Kiev residents took shelter in underground metro stations and other shelters after air raid warnings covered much of the country early Tuesday.

On Monday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated the warning of a potentially major attack and urged residents to pay particular attention to air raid warnings. “Intelligence warnings about Russian attacks are in effect. A major attack is possible, they have prepared one,” the Ukrainian president said in his nightly video speech.

“Our defenders are ready 24/7 to the greatest extent possible with the supplies currently available.”

In the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine, mayor Ihor Terekhov said that 10 people, including a child, were injured in drone and missile attacks.

Russia warned last week that it intends to launch “systematic attacks” on targets linked to the Ukrainian military and decision-making centers in Kiev and urged foreigners to leave the region. The statement came after a drone attack on a student dormitory in Ukraine’s Russian-held Luhansk region, killing 21 people. Ukraine has denied carrying out the attack.
