Death toll in fire mishap rises to 25, including 4 tourists and 14 staff members

Goa Police said on Sunday that the death toll in a massive fire at a club in Arpora, Goa, has risen to 25, including 4 tourists and 14 staff. Officials also said that the seven bodies recovered have not yet been identified.

“A major fire broke out at Birch near Romeo Lane in Arpora, North Goa, resulting in 25 deaths, of which 4 were tourists, 14 were staff and 7 were yet to be identified. Six people were injured and are undergoing treatment. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Police and fire brigade investigations are on. Legal action is being initiated,” police said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the relatives of those killed in the fire accident.

The injured will be given Rs 50,000 from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

In a post on X, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) wrote: “The next of kin of each person killed in the accident in Arpora, Goa will be given a gift of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF. The injured will be given Rs 50,000.”

The fire at the club restaurant was reported around midnight on Sunday and emergency crews rushed to the scene. While the injured were taken to surrounding hospitals for treatment, authorities worked throughout the night to bring the situation under control.

Authorities launched a detailed investigation into the cause of the fire. Officials said that efforts are continuing to provide medical support to the injured and assistance to the families of the dead.

Earlier, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had ordered an investigation into the matter. He also expressed his condolences to the grieving families.

“The incident is very unfortunate for a tourism country like Goa. Those who run such businesses illegally and a fire incident occurred. 23 people lost their lives. The government will conduct an investigation into this incident. The investigation will investigate the exact cause of the fire and those responsible will face the heaviest sanctions under the law.”
