Debit card skimming device, hidden camera found at popular Mass. supermarket

A debit card skimming device and a hidden camera were found at an ATM inside a popular Massachusetts grocery store on Friday, authorities said.

According to the Chelmsford Police Department, the device was discovered at the Hannaford Supermarket at 66 Drum Hill Road in Chelmsford.

Police said a private company representative, while performing maintenance on an ATM at the entrance to the supermarket, discovered the device along with a hidden camera that could record PIN numbers.

It’s unclear how long the Skimmer remained at the ATM, but anyone who may have used the machine is advised to change their PIN and closely monitor their bank statements for signs of suspicious activity.

Anyone who detects suspicious activity should immediately notify both their bank and Chelmsford police.

Police also shared the following tips to help people avoid falling victim to ATM card readers:

  • Inspect ATMs, POS terminals and other card readers before using them. Check for anything loose, warped, damaged or scratched. If you notice anything unusual, do not use the card reader.

  • Pull the edges of the keypad before entering your PIN. Then, cover the keypad as completely as possible when entering your PIN to prevent cameras from recording your entry. Note that a pinhole camera may be located anywhere on or around the terminal.

  • If possible, use ATMs in a well-lit, indoor location. These may still be compromised, but they are less vulnerable targets.

The investigation into Friday’s discovery continues.
