‘Deep concern’ as Iran’s major nuclear power plant in Bushehr ‘hit’ by airstrike | World | News

The UN atomic watchdog has expressed “deep concern” after Iran claimed an airstrike had been carried out near one of its major nuclear facilities. On April 4, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) claimed that there was an attack near the Bushehr nuclear facility.

Iran has claimed that the facility, located 750 miles south of Tehran, has been targeted four times since the start of the US- and Israeli-led Operation Epic Fury. AEOI stated in its social media post that a security guard was killed and a support building was damaged in the latest attack. It is not yet clear who carried out the alleged attack.

The report led Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to call for urgent restraint.

In a post on

“Iran also reported to the IAEA that one of the facility’s physical protection personnel was killed by a shell fragment and that a building at the site was affected by shock waves and fragments.”

The agency added that although no increase in radiation levels was reported, Mr Grossi was deeply concerned by the reported incident.

In the post, Mr. Grossi expresses his “deep concern about the reported incident and says nuclear power plant sites or nearby areas should never be attacked, noting that auxiliary plant buildings may contain vital safety equipment.”

“Reiterating his call for maximum military restraint to avoid the risk of nuclear accidents, DG Grossi once again emphasizes the great importance of adhering to the seven pillars of ensuring nuclear security during a conflict.”
