Defence set for biggest overhaul in decades

Labor is set to announce the biggest overhaul of Defense in decades in a bid to boost performance in a department plagued by cost overruns and delays in procuring new military equipment.
The Albanian government will announce reforms on Monday, along with a new institution to oversee the capacity and budgets of the three areas within Defense, a ministry source confirmed.
These include the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group, which was established to meet military equipment and supply needs.
Speaking at an Australian Industry Group event, Defense Industry Minister Pat Conroy said he and Defense Minister Richard Marles were “very clear” about their strong intention to continue the reform agenda they launched in late 2022.
“This process makes a huge difference to how we deal with complex projects,” Mr. Conroy said last week.
“It is attracting more attention from both companies and Defence.
“It breaks down roadblocks and actually makes a meaningful difference.”
The changes aim to increase the accountability of Defense decision-makers.
An auditor general report published earlier this year found Defense had failed for almost two-and-a-half years to provide Mr Marles with official updates on the readiness of the army, air force and navy.
“Everything is on the table, including bureaucratic reform in the Department of Defence, the Australian Defense Force and the defense services,” Mr Marles told a conference of senior officers in June.
