Delaware mayor blames Philadelphia for city’s growing homeless crisis

Wilmington, Delaware Mayor John Carney blamed Philadelphia for the increase in homelessness in his city.

At a press conference last week, Carney announced new measures to tackle the homelessness crisis, including designating Christina Park as a place for homeless individuals to sleep.

Carney placed much of the blame on other cities and states that reportedly bussed their homeless populations into his city.

highlighted Philadelphia For the Stranded Traveler Assistance program, which provides homeless residents with taxpayer-funded bus tickets to any city in the country.

“It’s not right for other places, cities and towns to send their families to Wilmington,” Carney said. “The constant influx from other cities and towns makes it difficult for us to care for the population here, and most importantly, it is unfair to the urban residents who live in these neighborhoods.”

When reached for comment, Carney’s office told Fox News Digital that the mayor’s comments were based on information they had received.

Carney previously wrote to Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker in May about the Kensington Community Revitalization Program, which aims to clean up the open-air drug market in the Kensington area.

“Since the inception of the Kensington Community Revitalization Program, we have observed a dramatic increase in the number of individuals experiencing homelessness within our borders,” Carney wrote. According to 6ABC.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Parker’s office for comment.

Accordingly NBC PhiladelphiaStranded Traveler Assistance funded 875 trips in 276 U.S. cities between 2021 and 2025. Of these trips, 14 were sent to Delaware and eight were sent specifically to Wilmington.

Carney’s comments come months after President Donald Trump signed an executive order allowing cities and states to remove homeless people from the streets for rehabilitation, treatment and other facilities.
