Delhi Police’s big charge, says 2020 riots were regime change operation

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and other accused in the Delhi riots case on Friday.
Delhi Police on Thursday held a mirror to those who called the Delhi riots a ‘peaceful protest’. An important clarification was made in an affidavit submitted by the Delhi Police to the Supreme Court. The February 2020 Delhi riots were stated to be a conspiracy to overthrow the government under the guise of anti-CAA protests.
On October 31, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and other accused in the Delhi riots case. Delhi Police had made an earlier statement. This affidavit contains rich evidence against Umar Khalid and other defendants. He uncovers a plot to overthrow the government under the guise of insurrection.
In the 177-page affidavit, the police made it clear that these protests were not just road blockades against the CAA but also a well-planned conspiracy to destabilize the country. Delhi Police, with the help of chats, documents and technical evidence, proved that this plan was to attract foreign media attention during Trump’s visit.
On page 3 of the statement, the police wrote that based on their investigation, the goal was not only to incite the crowd to riot, but also to provoke them into armed rebellion. The affidavit clearly states that this is not an anti-CAA riot but a campaign to change the government. Page 3 also states that this was done to attract foreign media attention during US President Donald Trump’s visit.
Opposing bail, the Delhi Police made it clear that the ultimate aim of the riots was a coup. The affidavit states that “Delhi Protest Support Group (DPSG)” was formed where accused Umar Khalid suggested the idea of using Chakka Jam to trigger riots. This group speaks of a systematic plan to incite riots across the country. This means that a plan is afoot to challenge the government by inciting pan-India riots. The Delhi Police also further strengthened the Delhi Police investigation by including the statements of 900 witnesses detailing the activities of several accused, including Umar Khalid.
