Delhi’s Air Pollution: As the air quality in Delhi once again falls into the serious category, Yu Jing, Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in India, shared his views on how China has worked to reduce air pollution over the last decade. Underlining the measures that contribute to cleaner air in many major cities of China, the spokesperson explained that the progress made by China stems from a long-term, coordinated policy approach.

According to Yu Jing, China has focused on multiple parallel steps to control pollution. One of the key measures taken was the closure of small and inefficient coal-fired boilers, which contribute significantly to urban pollution. In addition, to reduce emissions in densely populated areas, many highly polluting industrial facilities have either been moved away from urban centers or permanently closed.

Thanks to a decade-long clean air policy, air quality in Chinese cities is among the fastest improving in the world:

China has also tightened regulatory requirements to limit pollutants released into the air, introducing stricter emissions standards for both heavy industry and vehicles. In addition, the country has expanded its renewable energy capacity, including the construction of large wind, solar and hydroelectric facilities, reducing dependence on high-emission fuels.

Yu Jing emphasized that China has invested in satellite-based monitoring, real-time air quality reporting systems and strict regulatory oversight to ensure transparency and enforcement. Non-compliance and falsification of environmental data were met with legal penalties, strengthening the accountability of both industries and local authorities.

The statements come at a time when Delhi and surrounding areas are experiencing recurring air pollution problems linked to seasonal weather conditions, vehicle emissions, construction dust and agricultural stubble burning. Authorities and experts in India continue to explore both regulatory and technological approaches to address the issue.

Yu Jing’s comments suggested that long-term planning, stringent implementation, and a transition to cleaner energy sources are central to China’s air quality improvements and offer a perspective on policy measures that contribute to measurable changes over time.
