Delta Air Lines cancels route permanently, offers refunds

While many airlines enter 2026 with some financial difficulties, the third-largest U.S. airline is in better shape than most.

in the last one earnings call Delta Air Lines, released in October 2025, beat analyst expectations with revenue of $15.2 billion and adjusted revenue of $1.71 earnings per share compared to the average analyst consensus of $1.53 expected.

The projected outlook for the final quarter of the year, with the next earnings report scheduled for January 13, is for earnings of $1.60 to $1.90 per share. A $200 million cut is expected It reduced profits due to the 43-day government shutdown in October and November.

Delta Air Lines has confirmed it will no longer fly to Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM) in upstate New York along the Pennsylvania border, as part of efforts to shrink its non-profit route network.

BGM, a two-hour drive from the larger Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR), has been $54 million renovation but it had difficulty retaining airlines willing to operate flights.

Delta became the only carrier serving the area after low-cost carrier Avelo withdrew from the Binghamton market in 2024 due to lack of profitability. The airline’s daily flight from Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) will operate for the last time on February 14. While airport officials are in talks to include other commercial airlines, for now BGA will only serve general aviation, such as flight training, air ambulances and agricultural flights.

“Air service decisions involve many factors that are beyond the control of local airports and communities,” GBA Aviation Commissioner Mark Heefner said in a statement. “We are in active discussions with Delta and working closely with our state, local and federal partners to restore passenger service as quickly as possible. We also continue to hold meetings with multiple airlines as we explore opportunities to expand air service in BGM. Our focus remains on providing reliable, accessible air travel options for the people and businesses of the Greater Binghamton area.”

Heefner also said Delta will contact passengers who booked tickets for flights after Feb. 14 with options for a refund or rebooking on an alternative route. Travelers also initiate repayment independently online through flight bookings.

United Airlines has not flown to BGA since 2016, while American Airlines left in 2017. Because Binghamton is far enough from both New York and Syracuse to make a regional airport useful to the community, many locals wonder about its future as a commercial airport.

“This is a difficult, very difficult situation to be in,” Heefner said. “It’s not a place we want to be in, but I think there’s an opportunity. If someone maintains the route and looks at it in a year or so, I think there will be better service overall.”
