Comedian Bill Maher said in an interview on Sunday that he could see himself voting Republican, but the party would have to be very different.
Maher, a long-time critic of President Donald Trump and supporter of Democrats, said in an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria that “of course” he could see himself voting Republican, but “they’re definitely going to have to lose the ‘we’re not accepting the election’ idea.”
“And my biggest concern is that they think the excesses of the left are so great that they defy common sense. And again, they’re not entirely wrong about that — they are — they’ve never encountered anything that defies logic that they don’t embrace. They can’t let these people take power, and so even if they have to, if democracy has to be sacrificed to hold on to power,” Maher said. “That’s what I’m worried about.”

Maher wondered whether the GOP would still embrace the idea of not letting the other side take power after Trump completes his second term.
“Are they still going to hold on to the idea that we can’t let these people take power? These people have no common sense, they want to reinvent everything. They are revolutionaries in a country that doesn’t want revolution; they just want the politicians to fix things. That’s my biggest concern,” the comedian said.
Maher said he hopes for a “return to normal” after Trump.
“My hope is that Trump won’t concede the election when he’s no longer on the ballot — but we still don’t know for sure because he’s talked about running for a third term, which is completely constitutionally impossible, which doesn’t seem to bother him — maybe we’ll get back to a sense of normalcy. Maybe J.D. Vance and Marco Rubio will go back to what we used to have, but I’m not sure about that,” he said.

Maher took aim at both sides of the political aisle during the interview, asking, “Why can’t they both be normal?” he asked.
The comedian said Trump needs to stop committing “excesses,” telling CNN that the president was right about the border, DEI and NATO paying more.

“It showed that you could close the border,” Maher said. “This wasn’t something you needed congressional help with. You could do it, and he did it. He just went too far. People don’t like to see people seized at Home Depot and their acquaintances who have been in this country for a long time.”
