CBD stabbing suspect Lauren Darul refused bail as alleged four-year crime spree revealed
The alleged weapon.
He said he was satisfied Darul posed an “unacceptable risk” of reoffending if released.
“[Darul] He has a history of not showing up to court when released on bail. The application includes nine findings of guilt for failing to appear in court while on bail since 2022… [and] “Eight findings of guilt for committing an indictable offense while on bail were made,” he said.
Police allege Darul was involved in five separate criminal incidents in the three months before he stabbed Lai in a random attack in Melbourne’s CBD at 7.35am on October 2.
Months earlier – on June 10 – police say Darul was walking near the Melbourne Aquarium, shouting and swearing, passing a family walking the other way and spitting in the face of a young boy.
“A significant amount of saliva splattered onto the victim’s face and entered his eyes and mouth,” the police report said.

When asked why he spit on the boy, Darul allegedly told police: “I don’t know. I’m really sorry.” He also said he used the drug ice regularly and last used it the day before.
Darul, who allegedly scratched a car in North Melbourne in August 2024, told police: “I don’t remember doing anything like that.”
He was then shown the CCTV footage and said: “Wow, that looks like me, I’m not in a very happy mood.”
In January 2024, police alleged Darul was found with a fake gun in his trousers at Flinders Street railway station after previously trying to steal cigarettes from a convenience store in South Melbourne. He allegedly told police he found the fake gun and “took it to a friend’s house for sexual purposes.”
Court documents also reveal that police asked Darul about being drunk in December 2023 (a breach of bail conditions).
“He thinks it is ridiculous that the court is telling him that he cannot drink alcohol when it is a legal substance and he is not the father of the court,” police wrote in the charge sheets.
Darul is also accused of causing $10,000 worth of damage by throwing a wooden shipping pallet outside a Carpet Court store in Nunawading.
He will spend the next two months in custody before appearing in court on January 20.
