Devastating bushfires sweep Central Victoria

The Bureau of Meteorology’s fire danger ratings were remarkable for their clarity.
Of all the regions in Victoria, West and South Gippsland had the lowest Fire Behavior Index of 65, currently in the “Extreme Danger” zone. North Central, Northern Country, South West and Wimmera showed a “Disaster” rating of 100 or above on the scale. Central Victoria received 99 points. A fire started in this area on January 8, south of the town of Longwood, 149 km north of Melbourne.
