DFES reveals the popular household appliances causing more than 10 per cent of property fires

According to the Ministry of Fire and Emergency Services, since June 1, 136 building fire has been initiated by heating systems such as fireplaces, electric blankets or chimney holes since June 16.
Seven of them were fired with a chimney or gas ventilation chimney, three of them portable heater and two of them with an open closed fireplace.

And last winter, a young man in Cannington suffered serious burns when their beds caught fire from the heater.
DFES Deputy Commissioner Operations Craig Waters, the heater fires often caused by mechanical failures or operational deficiencies, he said.
West, “(fires) when not in use by closing the devices, by controlling the devices for damage, heaters by cleaning the dust and dirt, the power supply does not overload with multiple adapters and can be prevented by keeping flammable elements at least one meter away from heaters,” he said.
He said it was very important that the houses were equipped with working smoke alarms.

“Make sure you have a home fire escape plan, make sure your family knows what to do if a fire starts, and check your smoke alarm regularly,” he said.
“Only a working smoke alarm will awaken you and give you a vital time to escape.
“Never leave heaters in bedrooms, especially in children’s bedrooms.”
Leigh Bohmke, Director of Retailer Fireplace Corner, advises homeowners to serve gas heating devices every two to three years.
“Any gas device you have should be served and controlled and cleaned in terms of security,” he said.
The episode also reported that 24 fire has been fired by the dryer since June 2024.

Mr. Waters called on society to remain vigilant and warned that the flames could swallow an entire room in a few minutes.
“As people spend more time in the interior and try to keep them warm overnight, we want them to be awake by heating systems because they increase the risk of home fires,” he said.
“The speed and savagery of a fire can leave a little time to escape by swallowing a room in less than five minutes.”
