Shortly after Trump’s warning, the Iranian government postponed the execution of protester Erfan Soltani. Supreme Leader Khamenei later pardoned another 800 protesters. Iranian officials also promised Trump they would refrain from using too much force against demonstrators.
The Real Reason Behind Trump’s Pause
Trump may seem to have backed down because he met Iran’s demands and pardoned the protesters, but the real reason lies deeper. Behind the scenes, Trump may be showing mercy or setting a trap.
To understand Trump’s plan, look back a few days. Key US allies in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, have urged Trump not to launch attacks and warned that Iran could retaliate by targeting them. A day later, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Trump and recommended that the attack be postponed and pointed out that Israel’s air defense systems were not yet strong enough to fully resist Iranian attacks.
Iran’s Strong Missile Stock
Trump may have used his executive promises as an excuse to pause. The real problem may be fear of Iranian missiles that could seriously harm US allies. This might explain why Trump chose to wait.
Reports indicate that Iran produces approximately 50 missiles each month and has more than 3,000 ballistic missiles in stock. Some are hypersonic, fast-moving and can evade US and Israeli defenses. Most have a range of 1,500 to 2,000 kilometers, enough to hit nearly any US base, ship and facility in places like Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
Even if these missiles cannot reach the US mainland, Iran can target allies such as Israel, which does not have the power to intercept thousands of them.
These risks likely caused Trump to postpone the attack for now.
Mossad Chief’s Important White House Visit
