Did Trump really rescue Venezuela? – podcast | Venezuela

“I last flew from Venezuela at the beginning of August 2024, just after the disputed presidential election,” said the Guardian’s Latin America correspondent. Tom Phillipstells Annie Kelly.
“It was a moment of real turmoil. A massive wave of repression was unfolding as Nicolás Maduro sought to silence any opposition to his false claim that he had won the election. Thousands of people were jailed, many were going underground, and journalists were racing to get out of the country.”
When Tom returned to Venezuela in late April, four months after the US kidnapped Maduro, the country felt very different. “It was uplifting in a sense to see political activism happening again, people coming out of hiding, hundreds of political prisoners being released.”
But Venezuelans have also expressed concern that political change could be a mirage.
