An Indian takeaway in Redcar, North Yorkshire, has been criticized with a rating of 1 out of 5 for food hygiene after it was found to be extremely dirty and pose a number of health risks. Seaside Tandoori on Lord Street is said to need a “major upgrade” after it was discovered it contained “high electrocution risks”

Upon examination, it was determined that the microwave oven was placed on a piece of wood on a drainage board. The report stated that it was “immediately moved” because it posed a major health hazard.

Dirty areas extend to sinks and sinks; door seals and handles of refrigerators and freezers; light switches; oven stove controls and the walls, floor and ceiling of the staff toilet.

The sink used for employees to wash their hands was covered with equipment.

One inspector wrote: “Staff noted that the same cloths were used to clean raw and ready-to-eat contact surfaces, posing a risk of contamination.

“Cloths need to be kept clean, disinfected and changed regularly (although it is more hygienic to use disposable cloths). It is important to use separate cloths to clean raw and ready-to-eat food equipment to prevent contamination.”

The inspector noted that the building was in a structural state of disrepair, with holes in the ceiling and damaged walls revealing bare plaster. The inspector also said there were no documented food safety management procedures and no existing monitoring records.

No discrepancies were detected in the provision of allergen information to customers or in the description of the food sold. The takeaway’s representative said improvements were made in an attempt to get a re-rating.
