Divers brave crocs in search for body seen in water

Police divers are bravely working in waters where a crocodile has been spotted to search for the body of an unidentified man seen near a naval base.

Police were alerted after the body was seen floating in the water near a naval ship anchored in Darwin Harbor at around 6.30pm on Sunday.

Northern Territory Police search and rescue acting officer-in-charge Chris Harden told reporters on Tuesday that the vehicle was last seen underwater shortly after officers arrived.

Air, water and land search teams have been searching for the body for two days with the help of NT Surf Life Saving members, including the use of helicopters and jet skis.

Police divers were due to be deployed on Tuesday afternoon to search the area where the body was last seen.

“A crocodile was spotted in the water by helicopter so I wish good luck to any brave souls who will venture into the water,” Senior Sergeant Harden said.

A crocodile management team was also present as a precaution.

Police are appealing for information from anyone with concerns about a person not attending appointments or being uncontactable, particularly in the Darwin Harbor area.

Sen Sergeant Harden said nothing had been ruled out in terms of the man’s death.

The man was seen to have white skin, a slim build, medium-length gray hair and was last seen wearing a light-coloured shirt.

Police will decide whether to continue the search late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
