Picture yourself on a starry night in Mumbai, looking at the shining Moon from your balcony, imagining what it would be like to zoom around it in a spaceship. It doesn’t come down, but it flies close enough to peek at the hidden far side that Earth can never see. Sounds like an exciting Bollywood sci-fi scene, right? But this is not a fantasy. In the coming weeks, four brave astronauts will make this dream a reality through NASA’s Artemis II mission, and the world is buzzing with excitement, especially in India where we celebrate ISRO’s achievements.

Consider this: The last time humans went near the Moon was during the Apollo era in 1972. This was over fifty years before most of us were born! Back then, astronauts like Neil Armstrong were treading moon dust, collecting rocks that held the secrets of the universe, and beaming live images to families gathered around old televisions. After that, the Moon missions fell silent, like a favorite program after a long hiatus. Now NASA is bringing it back with Artemis, named after the Greek goddess of the Moon. This isn’t just a one-time adventure; a long-term plan to return humans to the Moon, set up camps for long stays there, and eventually reach Mars. The Moon becomes our nearby training ground, teaching us how to survive far from Earth, manage air, water, and even grow food in harsh conditions.

Artemis II is at the heart of this grand plan. The first was Artemis I in 2022; was an unmanned test in which the spacecraft orbited the Moon without a crew; This test needed to verify that everything worked against space hazards such as radiation and freezing cold. He bounced safely to the ground, reassuring the engineers. Artemis II now ups the ante by sending real people. These four astronauts will orbit the Moon and get within 100 kilometers of its cratered surface before returning home. There has been no landing yet – this is the case for Artemis III – but this 10-day journey of around 4.5 lakh kilometers is testing human endurance in deep space. Powering this epic journey is the Space Launch System, a 98-meter-tall rocket (taller than the Statue of Liberty). This monster produces thrust equal to thirteen Boeing 747 jets during takeoff and explodes with flames hotter than molten lava. On top of it is the Orion capsule, the astronauts’ home: a 10-foot-wide compartment with seats, computers, and life support systems that recycle air and water, like a high-tech camper. On January 17, 2026, NASA carefully moved this behemoth from its assembly building in Florida to Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center. The 6.4-kilometer journey in a massive tracked vehicle took eleven hours, crawling at only 1.6 km per hour (slower than a bicycle) to avoid any damage. This presentation marks a very important milestone that indicates the hardware is ready for release. Engineers recently completed major testing on Orion’s heat shield, which must withstand 2,760°C during reentry like a supershield that protects against firestorms.

Around February 2 comes a serious training run, what NASA calls a “wet dress rehearsal.” Teams will pump in 2.7 million liters of supercold fuel (liquid hydrogen and oxygen, cooled to -253°C and -183°C), simulate the entire countdown to launch time, and then dump it all without igniting the engines. This rehearsal catches problems early, like practicing cricket before the real match. If all goes well, launch is targeted for February 6, 2026, with backup dates up to February 15 if weather conditions cause delays (rockets don’t like storms or high winds).

Now meet the heroes who made history. Commander Reid Wiseman, a Navy pilot with space station experience, leads with his steady expertise. Pilot Victor Glover becomes the first Black astronaut on a lunar mission, inspiring millions of people that space is welcoming to everyone. Mission specialist Christina Koch already holds the record for the longest women’s spaceflight and will be the first woman to orbit the Moon; This proves that talent knows no gender. Canadian Jeremy Hansen represents international teamwork by showing how nations unite to dream big. These are not superheroes in the movies; they are real people who have trained hard, floating in weightless simulators, fixing fake malfunctions, sharing meals while isolated from families. Imagine their perspective; They watch the Earth turn into fragile blue marble, reminding us how precious our planet is.

Why should this matter to us Indians? Space is not a distant elite hobby, but a practical advancement. Our ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 landed at the Moon’s south pole in 2023 and discovered water ice that could fuel future rockets, like finding free gasoline. Artemis II is developing similar technology: better solar panels for clean energy, radiation shields to improve cancer treatments, robotics to inspire Indian startups. It creates engineering and science opportunities, strengthening our economy. Here’s the cool thing: 1.5 million names, thousands of them from India, are stored on a USB drive in Orion. As February approaches, excitement increases, just like before Diwali fireworks. There may be delays; perfection is more important than speed; but the reward is worth it.
