Doctor’s heatwave tip will cool you down with just 1 household item

Temperatures in Britain could reach a staggering 39 degree heatwave this week, easily breaking the all-time record high set in June. The Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning for extreme temperatures in central and southern England and Wales on Wednesday and Thursday, June 24.

The weather warning also includes an orange weather warning for extreme temperatures in many other parts of England and Wales, from Lancashire in the north to the Cornwall coast.

To help, a doctor called Dr Jonny Betteridge has shared his top tip on how to cool your body quickly and efficiently, and all you need is two ice packs.

“Are you having trouble sleeping in this heat? Then I’ve got a simple tip for you,” Dr Jonny said at the beginning of his video, before going on to explain his advice.

He said he was an NHS doctor in Emergency Medicine and Anesthesia who frequently treated patients with fevers of up to 40 to 43 degrees.

“Part of rapid cooling would be to place ice packs where the major blood vessels are. So the neck, armpit, or groin,” he explained, adding that he has personally found the armpits to be the most efficient area.

He then urged people to grab themselves a few small ice packs and wrap them in a thin cloth or gym T-shirt before placing them in your armpits or other areas where major blood vessels are located.

“And trust me, its effect on cooling the body is very good,” he said.

She later added: “I like sleeping on my side, so I put it under my armpit and lay on my side. This, combined with the fan, was enough to relax me and send me to sleep.”

People were quick to praise Dr Jonny for his helpful tips, while others continued to share their versions of how it helped them calm down.

“I’ve been using a cold, wet washcloth on my neck/back for the last few days and it’s really helped me,” one person said. Another shared: “”I sleep on my front, putting a damp tea towel on my back in front of the fan works great for me.”

Another said: “Tip from growing up somewhere hot: run a thin t-shirt under the tap, wring it out and put it on (preferably lying in front of a fan). This will dry quickly enough to keep you cool long enough to sleep but not gross.”

Meanwhile, others kept it simple by saying: “A fan pointing at my legs is perfection.”
