Domestic abusers sentenced to total of nearly 230 years in prison in Scotland

In Scotland, serial domestic violence perpetrators were sentenced to a total of almost 230 years in prison this year, under great pressure from the police.
The Force reported that in 2025, 32 criminals were sentenced to a total of more than 228 years in prison, and one person was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
They were convicted of 240 offenses following proactive investigations by Police Scotland’s domestic violence task force.
The offenses involved 110 victims, all women and children, with offenses under the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act including rape, sexual assault, stalking, permanent disfigurement, endangerment to life, threats to pets and more.

While domestic abuse crimes increased by 10 per cent in Scotland last year, detection rates increased by only 8 per cent.
Police Scotland officers respond to a domestic violence call every eight minutes, according to the latest figures. More than 66,000 incidents were reported between October 2024 and September this year, with 40.3 percent of them resulting in a criminal record.
Steve Johnson, deputy chief of major crimes, public protection and domestic crimes, said the force remained “relentless” in tackling domestic abuse.
He said: “Our officers are committed to ensuring women and girls live free from violence and abuse. We are relentless in our efforts to tackle domestic abuse. It will not be tolerated and perpetrators will be held accountable.”
“Every day of the year we combat violence against women and girls, preventing harm and bringing offenders to justice. We don’t do this alone, but we work with our partners to identify and address the social problems at the root of gender-based violence so we can stop abusive behavior before it starts.
“No one should have to suffer abuse. We are committed to supporting and protecting all victim survivors and investigating every report of domestic abuse so they can come forward safely. “Help is available and you don’t have to face this alone.
“As we look to 2026, our message to criminals is the same. If you continue to abuse and engage in abusive behavior, you will be caught and anyone who continues to abuse will face the full force of the law.”
Between 25 November and 10 December the force took part in an annual initiative focused on the elimination of gender-based violence called 16 Days of Activism; 500 domestic violence perpetrators were arrested here and more than 380 were charged.
