Dominic Calvert-Lewin: Leeds United striker could be ‘in conversation’ for England’s World Cup squad

But competition for places behind Kane is fierce.

Danny Welbeck has scored seven goals for Brighton this season; Just one goal short of Calvert-Lewin. Marcus Rashford rediscovered his form in Barcelona.

Ivan Toney, who currently plays for Al-Ahli, one of the Saudi Pro League teams, was used as a substitute player in Euro 2024.

But according to Murphy, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, who sank Chelsea on Saturday, is now ahead of Calvert-Lewin.

“If you compare the two players, Watkins has the advantage of using his pace to stretch teams and get behind,” he said.

“I’m not saying Calvert-Lewin doesn’t want to stay behind, because he does, but I think Watkins has the advantage when it comes to pace.

“He also has the advantage of making a meaningful impact in a major tournament. Calvert-Lewin made two substitute appearances at Euro 2020 but Watkins had that big moment at Euro 2024, scoring the winner in the semi-final against the Netherlands.

“He will also have a slight advantage in terms of understanding and relationships with the players in the current squad.”

Whether Calvert-Lewin is in England next summer may depend on how many specialist strikers Tuchel wants to have in his squad.

“Every player’s dream is for England and for Calvert-Lewin to be in the squad before, score goals and show that he is capable at this level, so he will have that belief in himself,” added Murphy.

“I think it depends on whether Tuchel gets two or three centre-forwards. If it’s three, he definitely has a chance.”
