Donald Trump responded after the vice president was evacuated before him after gunshots were heard at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, claiming he ‘wanted to see what was going on’.
To talk 60 Minutes Along with CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell on Sunday, Trump recalled the moment he was evicted after J.D. Vance.
O’Donnell explained that the vice president appeared to be escorted out about 30 seconds before Trump was flanked and taken to safety.
“What happened was, it was kind of me,” Trump said.
He then strangely claimed that he “wanted to see what was going on” despite video footage showing him on the ground.
He added: “And by then we started to realize that maybe this was a bad problem, a different kind of problem, a bad problem.”
“And it’s different from the normal noise you hear all the time coming from a ballroom.”
Circulating videos show guests ducking under tables and members of the Secret Service rushing to escort important officials out of the ballroom.
The president added: “I was surrounded by great people and I probably helped them move a little slower.
“I said, ‘Wait a minute, wait a minute. Let me see, wait a minute.'”
“Then I started walking with them, turned around, started walking.
“And they said, ‘Please get down. Please get down.
“So I went down, and so did the First Lady. But as I was walking, the agents asked us to come down.”
Trump confirmed that he was asked to leave the room “pretty much immediately” for security reasons.
Cole Allen, who is accused of trying to force his way into a ballroom during dinner armed with firearms and knives, had traveled around the country before the incident and is believed to have planned to target the President Donald Trump and other senior administration figures, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced Sunday.
Authorities said he tried to force his way into the spacious Washington Hilton ballroom but was overpowered during a chaotic confrontation that led to shots being fired.
