The US president was informed that FIFA wanted him to present the trophy to the tournament winners. Officials from Mexico and Canada are also expected to be invited to the closing ceremony.
While Trump was lifting the trophy at the Club World Cup, his presence on the podium next to Chelsea captain Reece James attracted attention.
Chelsea forward Cole Palmer looked visibly stunned, while FIFA president Gianni Infantino appeared to initially guide Trump, then encourage him to stay.
According to standard FIFA protocol, the World Cup trophy is usually placed on a pedestal and carried onto the stage by the winning team for the presentation ceremony. Sources indicate to talkSPORT that FIFA will ultimately leave it to Trump’s discretion as to whether he will stay with the winning team as they lift the trophy or stand alongside officials during the ceremony.
