Donald Trump ‘orders army chiefs to draw up plan to invade Greenland’: US President emboldened by success of Maduro capture operation

According to information obtained by The Mail on Sunday, Donald Trump ordered special force commanders to prepare a plan for the invasion of Greenland, but senior military figures are resisting this.
Sources say the ‘hawks’ around the US President, led by political consultant Stephen Miller, are so encouraged by the success of the operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro that they want to move quickly to seize the island before Russia or China make a move.
British diplomats believe Trump is also motivated by a desire to distract American voters from the performance of the US economy ahead of midterm elections later this year, after which he could lose control of Congress to the Democrats.
But such a dramatic move would put him at odds with Sir Keir Starmer and effectively lead to the collapse of NATO.
According to sources, the President has asked the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) to prepare the invasion plan, but the joint chiefs of staff are resisting on the grounds that the plan would be illegal and would not be supported by Congress.
A source said: ‘They tried to distract Trump by talking about less controversial measures such as interfering with Russian ‘ghost’ ships, a secret network of hundreds of ships operated by Moscow to evade Western sanctions, or launching an attack on Iran.’
Diplomats played out a war game in what they described as an “escalation scenario” in which Trump used force or “political pressure” to sever Greenland’s ties with Denmark.
A diplomatic cable states that the ‘worst case scenario’ would lead to ‘the destruction of NATO from within’.
He adds: ‘Some European officials suspect this is the real aim of the hard-line MAGA group around Trump. Invading Greenland could force the Europeans to leave NATO, as Congress will not allow Trump to leave NATO. If Trump wants to end NATO, this might be the best way to do it.’

Although America already has free access to the island, this will be put on a legal basis
Under the ‘Compromise Scenario’, Denmark will agree to give Trump full military access to Greenland and deny access to Russia and China.
This will be put on a legal basis, although America already has free access to the island.
The cable states: ‘For domestic political reasons, Trump may start with an escalation scenario that evolves into a compromise scenario.
‘European officials fear that the window of opportunity for Trump before the midterm elections will close in the summer, so action is expected as soon as possible. ‘The NATO summit on 7 July seems the natural timing for a compromise agreement’.
He concludes: ‘Current concerns [about an invasion] They are driven by the most extreme views coming from Stephen Miller. The UK’s position will be key, whether it stays engaged with its European allies or breaks ranks [to sanction Trump’s approach].’
A diplomatic source said: ‘Generals think Trump’s Greenland plan is crazy and illegal. That’s why they’re trying to deflect it with other major military operations. They say it’s like dealing with a five-year-old.
