“onLex Fridman Podcast“ In 2023, Bezos laid out a vision that looked more like science fiction than a business plan, but in his mind it was based on physics and scale.
“I would love to see a trillion people living in the solar system. If we had a trillion people at any given time, 1,000 Mozarts and 1000 Einsteins,” Bezos said. “Our solar system would be full of life, intelligence and energy. And we can easily support such a great civilization. resources in the solar system“

“The only way to achieve this vision is with giant space stations,” Bezos said. “The planetary surfaces are too small.”
Planets Are Not the Answer
Bezos’ argument is simple. Planets have boundaries.
The world supports approximately 8 billion people today. Scaling that number to even a fraction of what Bezos is talking about would push any planet beyond its physical limits. There’s only so much land, energy and available space to go around.
So he completely rejected planets as a long-term solution. In his words, these are too small.
Instead the focus shifts to space itself.

Real Bet is Floating Cities
Bezos points to massive, rotating space stations, structures that could act as self-sufficient worlds. Built using materials from the Moon or nearby asteroids, these habitats will rotate to simulate gravity and accommodate entire cities, farms, and industries.
“I think most people will want to live close to the Earth, not in Earth orbit, but around the Earth,” Bezos said on the podcast.
The positive side is scale. Space offers more raw materials and sustained solar energy than any planet could ever offer. Build enough of these stations and the human population and productivity ceiling starts to look much higher.
This is where the Mozart and Einstein line comes into play. For him, more people means more breakthroughs, more creativity and simultaneously more progress.
This also ties into his long-standing idea that the Earth should be protected rather than overbuilt; more like a protected home base than an industrial centre.

Big Vision, Slow Structure
Bezos didn’t outline a step-by-step timeline but was consistent about his starting point. Reduce the cost of transporting materials into space, then build using what’s already there.

The implication is not that a trillion people in space are nearby. Bezos sees a path where growth doesn’t hit a wall, it just goes off-planet.
