Donald Trump threatens Japan with tariff up to 35% as deadline looms

If US President Donald Trump could not reach an agreement between the two countries before a deadline next week, he threatened to apply “30% or 35%” tariff to Japan.

This would be much higher than 24% on April 2, as Trump’s so -called “Liberation Day”, in which he announced the upright import tasks in the world countries.

The tariffs in most trade partners were later reduced to 10% for 90 days to give time to negotiate agreements with Washington.

This pause will end on July 9, and Trump said he did not intend to extend the deadline.

Trump also continued to doubt that an agreement could be reached with Tokyo.

“We’ve dealt with Japan. I’m not sure we’ll make an agreement. I doubt,” he said.

Japan’s Embassy in Washington did not respond immediately to the BBC comment request.

Like many other countries, most of Japan’s exports to the United States are currently faced with 10% tax. Japanese vehicles and parts have 25% import tax, steel and aluminum are subject to 50% tariff.

Yoshimasa Hayashi, the leader of Japan, said that on Tuesday, he would not get concessions to his country’s farmers to make a deal with Washington.

Comments focused on the import of Japanese rice after criticizing Trump’s countries on trade policies against the United States.

“I respect Japan to show people how pampering with the spoiled countries about the United States, they will not take our rice, and there is still a big scarcity of rice.”

Trump initially said he would sign a 90 trade agreement during the new tariffs, but since then, Britain has made an agreement with the United States only.
