The organization responsible for the Nobel Peace Prize has flatly rejected suggestions that Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado could give her award to former US President Donald Trump. The Norwegian Nobel Institute reiterated in a brief statement on Friday that the Nobel Peace Prize cannot under any circumstances be revoked, transferred, shared or annulled once it is awarded. “The decision is final and valid for all time,” the institute said, referring to the rules governing the permanence of the award.
Machado’s Controversial Proposal
The statement came after statements by Machado, who won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership in Venezuela’s pro-democracy movement, that he wanted to give or share this honor with Trump. Machado made the comments in an interview with Fox News earlier this week, saying he believes the award belongs to the Venezuelan people and that he would be willing to give it to Trump as a sign of gratitude for his role in the recent capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by US forces. Maduro now faces drug trafficking charges in New York.
“I would absolutely love to be able to tell him personally that we believe the Venezuelan people want to give this to him and share it with him,” Machado said in the interview. He described Trump’s actions as historic and an important step towards democratic change in his country.
Trump’s Response and Political Context
Trump, who has long publicly expressed his desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, reacted to Machado’s comments by saying it would be a “great honor” to accept the award if offered. He has previously campaigned publicly for the prize since returning to office, highlighting what he describes as major foreign policy successes.
But in matters of governing Venezuela after Maduro’s capture, Trump supported Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro’s former vice president, who is now serving as acting president instead of Machado. He described Machado as a very good woman but suggested she did not have enough domestic support to govern Venezuela.
Nobel Rules and Machado’s Visit Plans
The Nobel Institute’s statement underlines that laureates cannot change the official status of their prizes once they are awarded; This makes Machado’s proposal legally and procedurally impossible. The institute also noted that honorees typically do not comment on what they say or plan after receiving the award.
Machado announced plans to visit Washington next week, where the Peace Prize issue and his meeting with Trump are expected to attract attention. A representative for Machado has not yet responded to requests for comment.
