Donna Mills, 85, doubles down after viral video clapping back at critic

“Knot’s Landing” star Donna Mills doubled down on her opinion after going viral with her defiant response to a critic targeting her appearance.
Last month, the 85-year-old actress set off a storm on social media when she shared a video addressing an Instagram user’s comment that she “wore too much makeup for her age.”
In the clip, Mills first appears in her usual flamboyant style, then briefly transforms into the stereotypical older woman with gray hair, pearls and wire-rimmed glasses.

“Is this how you wanted me to look?” he asked, giggling. “I’m sorry, I’m not sorry.”

The clip harkens back to Mills’ previous stylish look, saying: “I love the way I look. This my styleand style has no expiration date.”
Mills’ video went viral on social media, racking up more than 125,000 likes and rave reviews from fans and celebrities, including Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Kyle Richardson, Elizabeth Berkley, Nancy Sinatra and Dawn Robinson.

Mills took the stage on Tuesday Tamron Hall Show The TV presenter discussed the actress’ viral moment as she noted that her video has been viewed more than 1.8 million times.

While explaining why she decided to respond to the critic, Mills noted that the comment wasn’t just about her appearance.
“I don’t get those kinds of comments very often, but when I do, it’s ‘Who is this person? What do they think about women?'” Mills said. “I think.” he said.
“This isn’t just about me,” he continued. “This is about women in general and how women feel about themselves, right?

“That’s why I wanted to scream at them and say, ‘Wait a minute. No, no, I’m not accepting this.’ And I’m not going to stay silent about it,” Mills added.
Mills recalled that she was “completely surprised” by the viral response but appreciated that her message about aging and self-confidence had struck a chord.
“I’m grateful that people are hearing it,” he said. “Because I really feel like I have something to say to women. I want to say something to women, and I want to help.”

Addressing the broader conversation sparked by Mills’ video, Hall asked: “With all these empowering messages, why do people feel so comfortable telling women how they should dress and look at a certain age?”
“It seems to me they’ve been hearing this for years,” Mills said. “And now it’s a new era. It’s a new time. We’re living longer.”

“We are healthier,” he continued. “We can be healthier” So this is not the end. “You don’t get to 70, 75 or 80 and it’s over.”

The “Play Misty for Me” star highlighted the connection between self-image and personal happiness, saying: “I feel like when you look really good and you know you look good, you feel good, right?”
Mills also shared that she experienced moments of self-doubt after Hall asked her how she maintained her self-confidence “in a business that is unforgiving of women and aging.”
“When I look in the mirror I see everything is wrong,” Mills admitted.
“Then how can you tell us to see what is right?” he asked.

“Okay, I’ll fix it,” Mills said, and the audience laughed.
Earlier this month, Mills reacted to becoming a social media influencer with a post on Instagram.

“If you told me when I was 85 that I would go viral on social media, I wouldn’t have believed you… but here we are,” she wrote along with a screenshot of an article about her video.
“I’ve spent a lifetime speaking out, and I’ve always believed it works better with a wink, not a punch,” he added. “I’m so glad this moment found its audience exactly as it was intended.”
