Don’t need such friends: Akhilesh Yadav on PM Modi’s remark in Lok Sabha

Lucknow: Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to him as a “friend” who occasionally provides help, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said he does not need “such friends”.

“Akhilesh ji is my friend, so he helps me sometimes,” Modi had said in the Lok Sabha last week, while speaking on the now rejected constitutional amendment bill linked to women’s reservation.

The Chief Minister made this light-hearted comment after thanking SP MP Dharmendra for saying that he was from the OBC community and that it was his duty to look after everyone’s interest.

Asked about his comment at the press conference held here, Akhilesh Yadav said, “Yes, it is a very important question, but our microphone was turned off (in the Parliament). We said that we do not need such friends.”

He said only the prime minister could explain what aid he was talking about.

The former prime minister said, “As for the allegation of aid, if you ask the prime minister what kind of aid I provided, only he can answer that. As far as I know, such a thing did not happen.” he said.
Replying to a question, Yadav warned people to be careful, claiming that the BJP may resort to extreme measures in the face of defeat.

“I want to warn everyone to be alert and careful. While the BJP is losing, it can do anything. It is now heading towards defeat and once it is gone, it may never come back. This fear bothers them the most,” he said.
