Dozens of fire crews battling blaze near synagogue in North London

Dozens of firefighters responded to a fire near a synagogue in north London this evening.

Images circulating on social media show smoke rising from a building on Cazenove Road in Stamford Hill.

More than a dozen fire engines from stations across north London rushed to the scene shortly after 4pm on Thursday.

A large police cordon has been established blocking access to the road and emergency services are at the scene.

Video footage shows onlookers, some of whom appeared to be dressed in Jewish clothing, watching in horror.

Jewish neighborhood watch organization Shomrim said the fire broke out near a place of worship.

The Metropolitan Police, who helped evacuate nearby homes and the synagogue, are ‘keeping an eye out’ for what could have caused the fire.

It is not yet known whether he is injured or not.

A statement from the London Fire Brigade said: ’15 fire trucks and around 100 firefighters were called to a fire at a property on Cazenove Road in Stamford Hill.

‘The brigade received the first of more than 40 calls at 16:14 and Control Officers mobilized crews from Stoke Newington, Islington, Walthamstow and surrounding fire stations to the scene.

‘People are advised to avoid the area at this time as firefighters work to bring the fire under control.’

In his post about X, Shomrim said the property in flames was ‘the residence next to the synagogue’.

The article read: ‘The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, we are keeping an open mind.’
